 Dates:  1900-1969
Abstract:  TRW, Inc. was established in 1900, in Cleveland, Ohio, as the Cleveland Cap Screw Company. 7Title:  Clifford W. Henderson National Air Races Collection
 Creator:  Henderson, Clifford W.
 Dates:  1924-1983
Abstract:  Clifford William Henderson (1895-1984) was director of the National Air Races, 1928-1939, as well as other air races and expositions. Henderson managed and promoted sporting and cultural events, expositions, and conventions in the Los Angeles area after resigning from the National Air Races. He served with honor in North Africa during World War II, and founded the community of Palm Desert, California. The collection is a comprehensive body of documentary evidence reflecting the organization and implementation of the races, consisting of press releases, letters, programs, posters, tickets, buttons, clippings, certificates and plaques. The 1928 race was held in Los Angeles, but from 1929 to 1939 most of the races were held in Cleveland. They featured cross country races, short races, army and navy maneuvers, stunt flying, parachute jumping, gliders, dirigibles, balloons and model planes and were considered a working laboratory for the aviation industry where new developments could be tested and refined. The collection is useful to the study of the races as both a popular amusement and as an aviation industry endeavor. In addition, the collection contains excellent examples of graphic design and illustration and biographical materials on various aviators.

 Creator:  Hubbell, Charles H.
 Dates:  1929-1969
Abstract:  Charles H. Hubbell was a well-known aviation artist and native of Cleveland, Ohio. During World War I, he served in the Navy and was a draftsman in the design of naval aircraft. He graduated from the Cleveland School of Art in 1922, and became a commercial artist. Hubbell received his private pilots license in 1927 by exchanging aviation art with flight instructors for flying lessons. He was commissioned by Thompson Products of Cleveland to paint the winning aircraft of each year's Thompson Trophy Race. In 1937, the first Thompson Products aviation art calendar by Charles Hubbell was produced. He painted for the yearly calendar until 1969. In 1949, the Military Air Transport Service (MATS) invited Hubbell on an around the world tour. The result was the 1951 calendar featuring the aircraft and operations of MATS. Hubbell was also a consultant to the Thompson Auto-Album and Aviation Museum, and later the Crawford Auto-Aviation Collection of the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection consists of notes, correspondence, printed material, tracings, sketches, and working drawings.
